Plank width is the one spec you can see from across the room. Thickness, wear layer and core all matter more over the life of a floor, but width decides how a room reads the moment you walk in. Our Harper series is 9 inches wide and 48 inches long. Here is what that extra width does, where it pays off, and where a 7-inch plank is still the better call.
What a wider plank changes
- Fewer seams. Lay a 20-foot-wide room with 9-inch planks and you get about 27 rows. With 7-inch planks you get about 34. That is roughly a fifth fewer long joints running through the room.
- A calmer floor. Fewer lines mean the eye sees grain instead of stripes. In a big room that reads as more expensive and more like real wide-board hardwood.
- Room scale. Wide boards suit wide rooms. In an open kitchen, living and dining space, a 9-inch plank keeps the floor in proportion with the room instead of looking busy.
Where 9-inch Harper works best
- Open floor plans. Kitchen, family room and dining area on one continuous floor.
- Large finished basements. A wide plank makes a long basement feel like a living space rather than a hallway.
- Great rooms with tall ceilings, where narrow boards can look fussy.
- Light commercial spaces such as offices, studios and showrooms, where a clean, wide look matters. Check the warranty for commercial terms before you specify it.
When 7-inch is the better choice
Wider is not automatically better. In a small bedroom, a narrow hallway or a powder room, a 9-inch plank can look oversized, and more of each board ends up as offcuts against the walls. Older homes with lots of small, chopped-up rooms often look more natural in a 7-inch plank. For those jobs we point people to Montclair (7 × 48 in, 6.5mm) or Alpine (7 × 48 in, 5mm).
A simple rule: if most of the rooms are wider than about 12 feet and they connect to each other, go wide. If the house is mostly small rooms with doors, 7-inch usually looks better.

Harper gives you the wide-plank look on the same 6.5mm construction as Montclair. If you want the same width with a thicker core and a heavier wear layer for a rental or a busy commercial space, step up to Citadel 8mm.
Wide plank needs a flat floor
A longer, wider board shows a hump or a hollow more than a narrow one does. Our installation guide calls for the subfloor to be flat within 3/16 inch over 10 feet. Check it with a long straightedge before you buy, and plan a leveling pass if you find low spots. If you are laying Harper over concrete, our basement slab guide covers moisture testing and the vapor barrier.
Variation is part of the look
Every Harper color is a high-variation design, with real differences in tone and grain from plank to plank. That is what makes a wide floor look like real wood instead of a printed pattern. Open several boxes and mix them as you go so no two similar planks end up side by side. For the full how-to, see our wide-plank installation guide.

Frequently asked questions
Is 9-inch wide plank flooring better than 7-inch?
Neither is better everywhere. A 9-inch plank has fewer seams and suits open plans, large basements and rooms wider than about 12 feet. A 7-inch plank looks more natural in small rooms, narrow hallways and older homes with many small rooms.
Does wide plank vinyl make a room look bigger?
In large and open rooms, yes. Fewer seams make the floor read as one calm surface, which keeps a big space from looking busy. In a small room a very wide plank can look oversized.
What are the specs of Harper 9x48 SPC flooring?
Harper is 9 x 48 inches and 6.5mm thick, with a 5mm rigid SPC core, a 22 mil SUPERION wear layer and a 1.5mm attached IXPE pad. It comes 21.45 sq ft per box and carries a limited lifetime residential warranty.
Does wide plank flooring need a flatter subfloor?
A wide, long plank shows humps and dips more than a narrow one. Our installation guide calls for the subfloor to be flat within 3/16 inch over 10 feet, so check with a straightedge and level low spots first.
